If you are lucky enough to have a well-defined personal style that is amazing, it probably also means this article might not be for you. For many of us, figuring out what to wear to a photoshoot can be a source of stress. I'm not a particularly fashionable person myself, but after countless of portrait sessions I've inevitably had to turn myself into a stylist to help my clients look their best. After some trial and error, I've learned that there are specific clothing pieces that translate good on camera and add elegance to the photo regardless of the subject's age or body type. Good news is all these pieces are basics you probably already have in your wardrobe and on the odd chance that they aren't, they are those kinds of clothes that will last you a lifetime. But before going down the list remember, these are not rules, only suggestions applicable when what you are after is a timeless elegant portrait.
#1 SOLID & DARKER MUTED COLOURS
I remember when I first read an article suggesting this, I rolled my eyes at it. At the time, I was choosing to always style my subjects with loud patterns and colours. I know still do this if I'm shooting fashion related content, but when the protagonist of my image is the person, I've learned solid muted colours are my friend. This is because patterns and brighter tones tend to be distracting on the eye, pulling the attention away from the subject. When in doubt, black is always an elegant and safe choice, as it's both timeless and flattering on all body types. Besides, clothing trends and jewellery come and go out of fashion: but a black top was just as in style 50 years ago as it is today. This rule also applies to footwear, as the last thing you want is for your white socks to be stealing all the attention in the photo.
#2 LONG SLEEVED TOPS: V NECKS & OFF SHOULDER
If you're struggling on what top to pick for your portrait session V necks and off the shoulder tops have almost a magical quality to them. Their curved lines help the portrait flow and elongate the figure of whoever is wearing them. On the other hand, long sleeves also help to slim down your arms and pull the attention back to your face.
#3 DON'T HIDE YOUR WAIST
The waist and belly are areas that bring (unnecessary) insecurities to a lot of women. The reaction of somebody who is not confident with their body is usually to hide it, but in a photo, this will only translate as that subject being even larger than they actually are. What you want is a silhouette that brings out your beautiful curves. That is why it is always a good idea to either wear a garment that marks your waist or create one by adding a small belt. If your body has a more angular shape with no curves to accentuate you should still embrace it in a way that suits it: using garments such as a fitted blazer or a coat with a belt tied down around the waist area.
#4 LONG SKIRT WITH A SLIT
This versatile garment is not only a lot of fun to photograph and pose in, but it will automatically add elegance to your look. Alternatively, longer skirts or pants will always be preferable to shorter versions, as the skin exposed will compete for attention with your face in the final image.
#5 DO YOUR MAKE UP AND HAIR IN A WAY THAT MATCHES YOUR CLOTHES
In order for a successful portrait to come together all the elements in the image need to be in harmony. When it's time to choose how to do your hair and make up always remember to match your clothing: don't waste money on an elaborate hair do if you're planning on wearing jeans and a shirt, but at the same time don't show up with a ponytail if you plan on wearing a gala outfit.
